Sweetwater Union High School District Seniors  Deadline Approaching

CVGS is presenting a $500 Scholarship Application for graduating Seniors to work on for this year. It involves more work than in the past but we think it

will expand their horizons and help them to understand the world better.

The students are to interview a Veteran of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Reserves, or National Guard, they can be from foreign countries. 

The Veterans can be a family member, neighbor, teacher, friend or stranger. Students are to use the format we are inclosing to accomplish this goal.

We are requesting that when the application is completed, the student brings it back to the Counselor by 15 March 2016. We will pick up the Application, the day after the Applications are turned into the Office on 16 March 2016.

The Applications will be judged by members of the Scholarship Committee. We have a point system we use to judge the Applications: 

1. follow the rules given and 

2. accomplishing the Applications goals.

It is judged on the quality of the students work. This Scholarship is not linked to academic or test scores. The Scholarship is intended to supplement the students’ Educational goals.

Second Page  Letter of Introduction to Include:

                        Title:  “Honoring A Veteran”

                        Student’s Name

                        Student’s Address

                        Student’s School

                        Counselor’s Name and Contact Information

Student will interview a Veteran of their choice.

They may use the questions enclosed and or questions of their own.

The essay will include the Veteran’s name, rank, rate, and service such as       

     Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, etc.

The essay will include the length of time served.

Student will write the essay of the Veteran’s story as a narrative.

The essay will speak of the Veteran’s experience while in the service.

Student will write his or her thoughts of what they have learned from the 

     interview.

Deadline for submission is Tuesday, March 15, 2016.

Essay is to be submitted by the Student to the Counselor’s Office.

Scholarship is for $500.00.

Prior to doing the interview, explain why you are asking a Veteran to  participate.  It is for a $500.00 scholarship to be awarded in May 2016 by the Chula Vista Genealogical Society.

The following questions can be used in your interview.  Your own questions  can also be used.

What motivated you to join the military?  (Can be US or another country)

How old were you when you enlisted or were drafted?

What kind of work did you do in the military?

How many tour(s) were you on? What was the duration of the tour(s)? 

Where did you serve while in the military?  Did you travel to other countries?  Where?

What was the most interesting or influential event that occurred during your time of service?

How did military service influence you and your family?

What advice would you give a young person (or high school student) regarding military service?

Green Co. Kentucky, Names and Trails Created

Green Co. Kentucky, Home of some Moody's and other collateral kin.


Green Co. Kentucky, what a interesting amount of boundary changes!

I found  it only one county away from Cumberland Co. of today.  Which stirs the pot and
tells me why so many surnames sound familiar.

Our Scott line came from Pittsylvania Co. VA to Cumberland (Indian Territory) pre 1795
as near as we can determine and some came later.

Another member of our society also is on this same  trail which makes it really intriguing to me.

They keep proving they traveled in groups and were family acting in their relationships.
The helped build each others barns, houses, bridges, fences, schools and their community.

Green River run through Green Co. Ky.

Any one have the Will of James Holloway? in helping a society member we found many had information but it was all synopsis of the original Will. So far no one has the Will. So back to Pittsylvania Co. VA.

I am posting here because obviously a trail, path was being created by the various names that left se Virginia and came to this part of Kentucky.

Learning that the boundaries were very different than what is shown today, totally expecting that to be the case.

Durham, Hampton, Moody, Scott, Lewis, Murray, Holloway are names that even though we knew not about joined seemed to have migrated about the same time to Cumberland and Green Co. KY.

Learning that more than 200 years later many of these names are interlinked closely.

Cumberland Co was formed in 1796 from Green Co.
Green Co was formed in 1792 from Lincoln & Nelson

Sad to say this site used to be bulging with data. I recommend the way back machine to find the older data.

I highly suspect that Herb Scott is also a rather close cousin of my family on Mom's side. I would try the rootslists that are recommended and write queries in hopes for answers.

 Going to check out the counties around Green because I know Cumberland was a much larger region in the  early 1800's.  When the SCOTT line went there it was still Indian Territory.

A Bit of Slavery Information.

A few weeks back, attending a nice lunch with friends, slavery came up in the topic.

Attempting to let them know that it was Blacks that brought the first Blacks to America to sell not white 's. The topic was joined by others at the table, fortunately one was definitely up to date on data also.

Why do  our history books try to teach non truths?  It is such a sad thing.  It is not just about this topic it is about many.

When our son went to college he took a History class, came home and said, " Mom why did I have to learn all that non truth in our High School History book, when this book quotes, things that are from the Library of Congress, which are opposite of all that reading."

That was my second wake up call. When a daughter was in Grammar School, she had a workbook so full of non truths, the district had it removed.

We as human's have to be careful what we feed our minds, it tends to create biases we do not need.

President's Day

 Remembering back when this date did not exist.  Young people are still attempting to catch up.

 Learning through the Media of today, few of our college students, know the President's name,
 VP name or any Cabinet members.

 Worse they were asked by various media about the Civil War. Our (?) Major war in the United States after we became a country.  Many implied they did not know who was on the North and who was on the South.  So if we have gone back to being one Nation why are we destroying our  historical sites that represent what happened when, so long ago.

 We are loosing our own history due to neglect by our own media and teachers and government.


 If your school is not teaching handwriting, woe be their future. Why because our original documents
are all written.  They are the base of our countries rules and laws.

History has a tendency of repeating itself and if the young do not know the history, they won't even know how to avoid damages.

So President's of the past. I gather this  day to represent you all.  Of course, it was Washington our first elected President. (He was not the first President) that started the voting system.  Some one had to  hold the position until he was elected.   This was started to honor President Washington and President Lincoln, but I am going to let it represent all our past Presidents because that may get taken away also.

Some day maybe we will wake up and Honor the people that kept us alive in the beginning and  give them their place in our society.

Blessings on all our Presidents, whether I like their politics has nothing to do with the fact of the position they held or  hold.
