Family History Month No. 10 Electronics?

This seems to suddenly be up in the face of genealogists, not a  bad thing we do need to be very aware.

1. Genealogy Bank has a book that will help I -Pad users on sale, Yes, I am getting one.
Special Offer from GenealogyBank

I should have covered this sooner but had to think about it as advertisement and then thought about it as Educational.  Educational won out.

If others are struggling to make their I Pad  work like a computer this is a big help.   I can use a powerhouse. I can use the knowledge.

Lisa Louise Cooke is the writer of this book. 159 pages of knowledge.

2. NGS posted today is ELECTRONIC RECORDS DAY.  See that fits right in with learning how to make you I - Pad work better for you.

This is my biggest short fall. Older computer needs all the data taken off so I do not have to re do it.

3. Must keep track of those thumb drives with all the talks on them I keep giving to others for when I am away.

4.  Do you upgrade your computer system and programs as you should?  Alas I am always struggling as to what I need and what I do not want. Then how do you know which is the  right  one?  Truly not  techie, mechanical yes.

5.  Do you keep your genealogical program current or let it slide also?

6.  Are you aware if your computer gets a certain age or your printer that they may no longer be compatible and work together?  My fear of to much upgrading is that can happen.

7.  Do you have other hand held devices? I have a great scanner and I think it has an upgrade also
need to ask Leland.

8.  What  about your recording device or do you just use your I - Pad?

9.  Of course then those who have I-Phones or cell phones that get upgraded, what about those?

10.  I am sure I missed lots of other devices but those are on the top of my head for thoughts.

I can send you or you can go to NGS Blog for all their hints and tips.  I see they also have a list of  ten.
I am going to read it now. Up Front with NG     http://upfront.ngsgenealogy.org/

Family HIstory Month Maps and more Maps

If you enjoy using maps like I do these sites may be of interest to you.

Preferring to have a Timeline that may follow along may be something for you to think about.

The United States changed fairly rapidly once it became independent of the UK.

Old Maps Online: Project

This site has many features it even pulls up my home area.

Then Randy's friend James Tanner has some great sources for Digital Maps of the States on his blog page:  Genealogy's Star: Online Digital Map Collections by State. I stumbled on to this site som etime back when looking for some specific data.

Having found James Tanners' site I recommend you follow him often or steady.

A newspaper article about Ancient counties and boundaries was discussed and displayed in the paper
"The Telegraph".Historic atlas with ancient counties and boundaries published online - Telegraph

Covering 500 years, and said to be vital for those who are research earlier Great Britian's area of Scotland, Wales and England.

How about NYC and wow the changes that were made.  Try this for the early parks and all the changes.
Historic Maps Reveal the Secrets of Four Iconic NYC Parks - That's Rather Historic - Curbed NY

Lots of side features listed that may help you in finding information of where to look in NYC.

More Maps of the American Nations | JayMan's Blog  another site for more information, lots of current information.

The Border Dispute and the "Aroostook War" Deals with Maine and New Brunswick border finalization.

The Map Of Native American Tribes You've Never Seen Before : Code Switch : NPR
I go back and reread this often.

How about this one?(99) Surname distribution maps  This is Facebook but never leave a rock unturned.

Do You Use Mailing Lists? Message Boards?

O way back when Brian L and others were making news with computer systems and programs and all that  good stuff. John Fuller came along and added to the fun. Rest in Peace John your sorely missed.

RootsWeb.com - Genealogy mailing lists

I think many do not use these because they are fearing fees from Ancestry.  NO, These are free.

There is much information that can be found on the beginning pages of the above site.

You can look for names, (surnames), and areas both/ County lists are great to narrow down your
research.

When people only had usgenweb.org to go to these lists were used more but do not forget them their value is still there.

I at times, rotate the lists I belong to but you can go to the archives and read the ones you may think pertinent.

Also use the message boards they are also important.

News about SDGS Spring Seminar

In January, the SDGS is hosting Joshua Taylor as the key note speaker for the Society.

San Diego Genealogical Society - Home

Watch this home page for further information.

Having met Joshua Taylor at Jamboree a couple of years ago, he is a very busy person and he
covers things many never talk about.

I loved the talk he gave on JSTOR which is a search engine device(?) to find information but it is used at
Universities, colleges etc.  I think the Law library in San Diego has it also.

The Librarian I worked for at CVHS taught me about JSTOR ten years ago. We genealogists are
just learning about it. Maybe it will be one of the talks he will present.??

He also shares a Trowbridge line  with me. Poor fellow.

Family History Information No. 5 CHARTS

Charts, Charts and Charts
 by Susi Pentico

Whether your a beginner or advanced here is hoping you always have an eye out for a new or different chart.
Ever once in a while a better one seems to fit into your plans.

Our recent workshop showed that many chart sites have bit the dust and are no longer on line.
So new ones are cropping up.

Cyndi Ingle's said Research Log is very key, having preached that for some time it made my heart sing.

Some charts can do more help than your aware until you start to use them.

Of course your aware of the 5 Generation Chart or 4 Gen Chart etc but what about the other 20 or so that I located and 2 that Randy Seaver created. I use those all the time. In fact, he updated them because he didn't realize the age of them.  Thanks Randy.

Below I am going to list places to have you look and try a few different charts, but first I want you to promise me you will attempt to use a Research Log if you have never done it before. It can become your fast friend in  many ways of negative and positive research.

Our society has many charts listed on it's pages.

A staple site I keep handy for charts.

This site is worth looking into.  Thanks Bethel and Shirley for the find.

Hope you look into these and start working with a Research Log.
