I think many do not use these because they are fearing fees from Ancestry. NO, These are free.
There is much information that can be found on the beginning pages of the above site.
You can look for names, (surnames), and areas both/ County lists are great to narrow down your
research.
When people only had usgenweb.org to go to these lists were used more but do not forget them their value is still there.
I at times, rotate the lists I belong to but you can go to the archives and read the ones you may think pertinent.
Also use the message boards they are also important.

News about SDGS Spring Seminar
In January, the SDGS is hosting Joshua Taylor as the key note speaker for the Society.

Having met Joshua Taylor at Jamboree a couple of years ago, he is a very busy person and he
covers things many never talk about.
I loved the talk he gave on JSTOR which is a search engine device(?) to find information but it is used at
Universities, colleges etc. I think the Law library in San Diego has it also.
The Librarian I worked for at CVHS taught me about JSTOR ten years ago. We genealogists are
just learning about it. Maybe it will be one of the talks he will present.??
He also shares a Trowbridge line with me. Poor fellow.

Family History Information No. 5 CHARTS
Charts, Charts and Charts

Whether your a beginner or advanced here is hoping you always have an eye out for a new or different chart.
Ever once in a while a better one seems to fit into your plans.
Our recent workshop showed that many chart sites have bit the dust and are no longer on line.
So new ones are cropping up.
Cyndi Ingle's said Research Log is very key, having preached that for some time it made my heart sing.
Some charts can do more help than your aware until you start to use them.
Of course your aware of the 5 Generation Chart or 4 Gen Chart etc but what about the other 20 or so that I located and 2 that Randy Seaver created. I use those all the time. In fact, he updated them because he didn't realize the age of them. Thanks Randy.
Below I am going to list places to have you look and try a few different charts, but first I want you to promise me you will attempt to use a Research Log if you have never done it before. It can become your fast friend in many ways of negative and positive research.

Probate records are my absolute favorite record type for identifying and proving family relationships. This presentation describes the overall probate process, the different kinds of probate records, and how to find and obtain probate records in repositories and online record collections.

Believe it or not, there is a lot of humor in genealogy research ? names, epitaphs, wills, cartoons, videos, poetry, apparel, wisdom, genealogisms, etc. This presentation takes a light hearted look at the best of the genealogy humor sites.
Bio:
Randy Seaver is a native San Diegan. His ancestry is mainly colonial New England and Upper Atlantic, with some colonial German, French and Dutch forebears, and several 19th-century English immigrants. He has been pursuing his elusive ancestors since 1988, and has been online since 1992.
Randy is a former President of the Chula Vista Genealogical Society, and is currently the Newsletter Editor and Research Chair. He speaks to Southern California societies, libraries and groups, and teaches "Beginning Computer Genealogy" adult classes at OASIS. He is a member of NGS, NEHGS, SCGS, SDGS, CGSSD and CVGS. Randy blogs daily about genealogy subjects at Genea-Musings (www.geneamusings.com) and the Chula Vista Genealogy Cafe (http://CVGenCafe.blogspot.com).

Family HIstory Prompt Day 2
Today, the President of the Society and I wandered the aisles of Michael's to be prepared for the
program in Lemon Grove.
There are so many ways to create a family heirloom for your family to keep and pass on to the next generation. Non-expensive, easy and fun ways to be involved in your families memories.
Sure you make a meal. present the meal, maybe your favorite type of pie or casserole is what is happening now but wouldn't it be more fun if it was some small item in a box that many people can enjoy.
We will be presenting these ideas at the Lemon Grove Meeting 15 October 2014. We have many to share and one you can have fun toying with on your own.

Family History Month Daily Prompt.
Today is the first day of Family History Month. The first year I was working on line and we had put together a 30 day daily event for attendees to participate in.
It was awesome, people from LDS, NGS, NEHGS, and many other organizations were guest speakers each night for one hour.
Maybe next year we can try this again on Google Plus.
So what did you do for Family History Day today?
I attended a Workshop Meeting for Saturday's workshop, I Pad would not work so I asked Karen to prompt what we needed to complete since I had also been gone two + weeks. We are ready? Are you attending?
Then attended a Board Meeting for CVGS. Some interesting comments battered around, nothing decided though. Did let the board know I would be working to get more people to bring gifts and food for the Salvation Army project we have done for many, many years.
Wrote a letter to a Family Search Director with a suggestion that was batted around in Blackfoot, ID.
Since it was a question often asked many of us, I decided to ask farther up the chain.
Please come to the Workshop on Saturday. It is FREE. FREE. You will receive a working Chart from Janet Hovorka and additional information from the Chula Vista Genealogical Society.
You will be part of a Memory Making Event, hoping you repeat some of this for your own family at Holiday Time.
You will learn how to get your family involved in learning about their own family. The ideas are really so simple yet unique we hope you will enjoy it as much as we have putting it together.
There will be coffee and light refreshment, an hour for you to have your lunch.
Lastly, Thanks to Janet H's assistance in this we are hoping for a major success. The Chart Chick.
