Judy G Russell of the Legal Genealogist posted data about the District Courts in Philadelphia about 1829.
This may help you to find the right court if the court you looked did not have it. You will need to probably look twice more.

I just received an email stating that the bill Governor Corbett signed 15 December 2011, will be affective
13 February, 2012.

Pennsylvania Governor Corbett signed Vital Records Bill SB-361 into law on December 15, 2011 as Act 110 of 2011. It goes into effect on February 13^th, 2012. State death records more than 50 years old and birth records more than 105 years old will then be available to all at the Pennsylvania State Archives in Harrisburg. However, the new law does not require that they be made available online, but now makes it legally possible to do so. We have to be vigilant in making sure the Governor and the State Archives do all they can to make sure the records are made available online and that we don't end up with the very real possibility of foot dragging or empty promises.

Finding NC court records | The Legal Genealogist

The book is named: North Carolina Research Genealogy and Local History by Helen F M Leary, 2nd edition.

She also mentions North Carolina Archives for information.

As the genealogical world is growing it seems in leaps and bounds the last few months I want to share some new places you may want to try and some ideas for your making genealogy easier for you.

If your doing church research and can not find them you may want to contact the head of the church affiliations and see what they have retained in their files. Many kept their weekly bulletins and newsletters that have many names listed through out. Thomas M. reminded me of this on his Facebook post this morning and I was using these sources recently with a friend, whom was not aware of these sources.

Most major religious affiliations have a head source to contact. I found many addresses in the books Ancestry printed some years back. The Source, and Printed Sources. This can be very helpful if a church or rectory burned and you think all the data is gone.

Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania was Presented

Last night at the Lemon Grove Library a synopsis of the information available to do research in Lancaster Co. PA was given to an audience of 5. Two were new members we will look forward to seeing often.

They will be doing research in Ireland and Italy. Welcome

With the map showing it was interesting to see how the dawn was showing on the faces of attendees as to how the size of the counties changed as the newer counties are developed. {This concept applies to any place for research and development of that specific area, including Italy and Ireland.}

Timelines, really help and knowing the time when the boundaries changed. Already we are seeing three counties as a place of research for just one early county (the parent county).

This county will be divided more later during presentations. Showing you will actually have five counties to research depending on your time frame to look for answers. Some counties have as the state is developed more than that.

I briefly touched on the fact we were talking about the area on the Maryland border which was also disputed as to where their boundary stopped. Records along this border can be found in either PA or Maryland for research and sometimes both places.

Books to consider using for good research in Pennsylvania are:
Pennsylvania Genealogical Research by George K Schweitzer, Ph. D. Sc. D.
The Pennsylvania Line by Iscrupes.
The Handy Book for Genealogists by Everton Press
And any local history book written to promote their own region and many are on line to be read and in state and historical libraries.

It is a premier software program for working with old land records, especially those surveyed using metes and bounds.

Can you believe another JONES, alas I did not get to meet him, since I carry five Jones lines I was curious to whom is lineage from.

He gave an interesting talk on the JONES name but I had already used his method to resolve a Huffman same name conflict. His method is accurate it does work or at least it did for me in 1993.

I liked that he stressed you have to think outside the box. If they are not there, maybe there weren't there or maybe they are listed different, I was amazed that the boundary changes weren't brought up to help cause the confusion of where they may have lived. Especially in early genealogy's research the boundaries for counties were in flux for quite some time.

He stressed many points very clearly and concisely. You check family first & neighbors second.
Families means all descendants of that family not just your ancestor. You also then check all of their children for more clues. I can say it works because I did that to find my distant cousin in PA and in NY.

No, I have not solved all the problems but I am farther along than I would have been by not reaching out.

I am constantly sending pleas for any one related to that line to respond.

You have to remember the language(Brogue) may change how a word is said or written. Literally, thousands of names were changed due to not understanding the word spoken. He also pointed out some deliberately changed names, we may never know why. Some are rather obvious when the 2nd wife is a county over & the third wife is three counties over. We were humans then as today we just do not like to admit it at times

Check land records, probates, wills, court proceedings, orphans courts records, tax records, town council minutes etc. Leave no stone unturned even if your not sure it is your stone.

In saying that he needs to add this site to his talk for people looking for some of the data he requested us to find. SAMPUBCO It has been a super valuable aid for my research for New York.

Lemon Grove Genealogy Group, I am sending notice that I arrived home from board meeting for our society to learn that a dear neighbor friend had past and the services are Friday. The family came in person to tell us so we are so grateful for that.

At times like this I could not nor would I ask of others to interrupt and go to a meeting. It seems our little corner of the world has been pinged on pretty hard of late. God has his reason's.

R.I. P. Lacy N, you were a friend, neighbor and great sharer of your self with others. Sweet Tea maker was the best. She was just a great friend to our children whom grew up together and baby sitter and her husband, children, & grandchildren are in our thoughts and prayers.

In the last few weeks it seems I have gotten exposed to lots of new search sites and places to play for free or for fee.

Having been a big fan of Mr. Samuelson and his information on Wills, Deeds, and Probates I follow him.

Today I got an update that he has updated his site.

So this morning I played. I dare not call it work for it has become quite a task.

SAMPUBCO Here is one of my favorite sites to play.

Due to New York being a non rewarding area to research I love to garner all the help I can get.
Having met a few distant cousins and found some nice new friends no better place to be.

Deciding I was going to crack this JONES problem or at least have an idea where to look next. So I went to New York and started reading all the JONES names in the Index of Wills. Having known some were mine from previous searches, I expanded my search in this method.

I decided to start with A and g to Z. So far the counties I have checked no one has listed anyone of the name I am researching. But I did find a Zebulon, a few Solomon's, Josiah, Samuel, William, Ebenezer, Elijah, Enos, and Timothy. O yes, there was that one NOEL JONES in Independence , Allegany Co. Ny.
His papers I have from LDS Library several years ago. The long court battle, the drugs, the loss of suit for children of his by first wife. It itself makes a story that one can make into a movie. NY-2-4-195

My Noel was born around 1785 near Albany, New York. His son was NOYES JONES, we believe him to be born Petersburg, Renssealear Co. Ny. Found the entry in the County Records, It lists his Mom as Susana and father NOEL JONES. From Noel to Noyes I can confirm on down. It is the Silas Jones Sr to NOEL I am struggling with. He is probably the son of Abel, Ruscomb or Noel the first three born sons of Silas. I suspect Abel but some one sent me a note saying to recheck NOEL, Silas, Sr. son born 14 April 1748

So hopefully by doing a county by county search I may find a clue on my elusive Noel Jones.

O yes I have information on other Noel Jones's but not born in the time frame given. Except one up in Utica in 1855 ? or 1860 in an Ad, that one ties to a John Jones . But Utica did not list him with a Will there.

Worried Wednesday with Help on Thursday

I had to cancel the Genealogy Meeting in Lemon Grove due to husbands illness. I apologize to everyone that the notice was late after we returned from the Doctor's. We will cover Pa Research the first three counties on the first Wed of December if all stays a steady course.

Wanting to comment on Wordless Wednesday, it is hoped we as genealogists take this to heart

Our Society is selling tickets to the Spring Seminar by William Dollarhide and Leland Meitzler for $35.0
Membership in our Society and most others are due before 1 January.
Magazines and quarterlies or books can be purchased from many places to help your genealogical family friend or member.
Societies wanting to make some funds could even have various people do a specific 2 hour research with a member for a fee to break brick walls or gather more information.
There are many things we can do and keep our money in the United States of America until our economy improves.
Having read that if we bought one less foreign made product every day that we could put our people back to work quicker says the power for the change is in our hands.

Genealogists are you up to this challenge, we can make a difference.

A friend sent me this yesterday and I thought it was appropriate to share.

When God takes something from your grasp. He's not punishing you, but merely opening your hands to receive something better.

If the following -- during these tough financial times for American business and with the coming holiday season -- doesn't make sense, then I don't know what does. If we were to follow this advice it would make a huge difference and would be one of the most memorable Christmases ever. I have no idea who wrote this ... Thanks RIck for sharing. SCP

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse ......that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is!

It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?
Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down the Benjamines on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre.

Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that Asia can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine.

THIS is the new American Christmas. Spread the Christmas cheer!

Education is Abound on Google+ Longest Hang Out

We have moved into many topics in this group. I always talk a bit about
genealogy and find a new starter almost daily, but we have moved in to
many great topics.

We have talked about music and the artists, the types of music, the times of
various music and shared songs.

We now moved into the science field with sea creatures.

We watched the start of Sea Monkey's last night. The night before a discussion was
held as to the better sea creature, Sea Monkeys or Triops.

We live streamed it for the world to see.

We also talked about Cow Ants. A bit of nasty
critters IE FIRE ANTS. Many of us had knowledge first hand of these critters.

Thursdays Adventure Black Out The Sky was Awesome

Thursday started like any other day. I went and pulled weeds while semi cool.
No we had not hit over 85 yet. It did not take it long to climb up the thermometer and
give us some heat. It was not near as bad as Tuesday which by 1 p m was 101 and by 2 p m was
102 degrees. We reached 98 on Thursday.

As I was off to get grandson from school suddenly the lights stopped working. It was about 3:28
or so. The farther west I went the more no lights were working.

It seems no one could remember it is a four way stop when this happens and intersections was
scary to creep through. I made it to the school and he (grandson) says Grandma we lost power
just as school was let out. Then his friends parents called and said they were tied up fighting
intersections to get to the school also. They did not understand why the lights were out.

Now believe me I did not know either. When we got home we learned power was out in south bay.
Later we learned power was out in most of the region, later learning no power in the county.
Then no Power in Orange County & no Power in a portion of Arizona.

We then moved out side and sat and watched the sky darken talking to our neighbors.
We used to do this often with out a power outage.

We came in and found candles and smokeless candles with no flame and set them out about in the
house for safety purposes. Cold Cereal was on the menu with fresh fruit. Iced tea was the main
drink of course we shared with the neighbors.

We went to bed around 10:15 to 10:30. Woke at 1:20 to light blinking on the screen for TV.

Grandson ate his cereal in the patio with the moonlight, I told him, not every 15 year old can
say they ate cereal by moonlight. It will be something he can share with his children in the
future. As my Mother used to say, " Your making Memories."

So we did make memories. 8 September 2011

We were only two but was joined with a new person the end of the evening. We had some lively chats about resources and people and places. Urls were shared and the time went so fast we could not believe it was almost 8 pm.

We talked about finding living people. We discussed the up coming seminar for the Chula Vista Genealogical Society 24 Sept. 8:30 to 3:30 with speakers Donna Bradley about American Indian Research APG speaker, author, & instructor.

We will also have Anne Bowman, speaking of Scot Irish Research. She is also a DAR member.
She gave a talk here in Lemon Grove a few months back and it was loaded with information.

Navy Seal's Families

We are asking everyone to say a prayer for the US "Navy Seals" team and their families. Their helicopter was shot down today in Afghanistan and have lost 30 team members. Books We Use or Should Use For Research

Having read both Marian and Heather's blogs. I think the topic deserves some comment.
I wonder how often I have offered advise to people but not always given them a concise
reference of books to potentially acquire to help in their research.

I know I am an avid fan of William Dollarhide, Map Guide to American Migration Routes, 1735-
1815. book. I recommend this book to every genealogist working genealogy in the United States.

I know I refer them to George W. Schweitzer's books for each state, that he did.

Thinking on this I am going to go one step beyond and print up a flyer with what I think are
critical books for any area for Beginners and Intermediate Research. I also feel Advanced can
get in a rut as much as Beginner's can get confused. Again as creatures of habit (rote) we sometimes do ourselves in with repetition and over look what we need to see.

We need to encourage others to use some good basic sources for the development of good habits.
We also should encourage others to try new things and not get so in a rut.

There are some good basic books out there for assistance.

My top books would be:

1.William Dollarhide's -Map Guide to American Migration Routes, 1735-1815.

2. George W Schweitzer's State books, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland etc.

3. Ancestry, The Source, & Printed Sources

4. The Handy Book for Genealogists.

5. Val D. Greenwood," The Researchers Guide to American Genealogy"

When doing region work the list changes by additional books being added.

I recommend people to read Will books. Do you realize you can piece a family together just reading Will books many times? I love the books about "left mail in the Post Office", Land Deeds, Probate books, Church Record books, Tax lists and Business License Registers. Of course, do not forget Census records whether in book form or otherwise. But they are not always the answer to what you
are looking for. Again these books are generic in nature to any area.

For specific areas, they have some really great books for each region, locale.

I hope this was of some help to those who read it.

52 Weeks of P G & H --- NEIGHBORS

Neighbors, are they the same as when you were young? Do we keep in touch the same way today?
Do we even know our neighbors like we did when Young?

When you live on a ranch or farm, (country life) much of your life depends on your neighbors and you make sure you know them and treat them well. You do not have police, medical or other help handy like when in the city (supposedly).

We knew our neighbors, we shared chores in times of need. We shared trial and tribulations and supported each other when I was a youth. I have attempted to always do that where I live. It makes a better living community. I have moved into areas that prior to our arrival were very aloof with each other. Once they met each other less crime, more fun and some even found they were related to each other.

Amazing the peace of mind when you know your neighbor has your back when things are not going well. Oh, things are not always perfect but it does help to have most of them on the same page.

Neighborhood Watch helps to foster this atmosphere also. Shame we had to have that to have some people become involved.

Block parties encourage this atmosphere also.

Fortunately for us many of our neighbors children now live in what was the grandparents home and so the community continues on.

Wednesday 6 to 7:50 pm we meet and share information and break brick walls and find new family and friends. The Lemon Grove Library is in the corner of the mini mall with Anna's Rest on the corner and is across from St. John the Catholic Church, 8073 Broadway, Lemon Grove, California.

Goose Sentry, On the Rock, Valley Ford, CA

1. Goose and Gander nested on this rock every year for many years. I did not ask if they were
their this year.

2.Eastern lower pasture towards the creek where the Willows grew.

3.The Rock, we climbed and got Poison Oak from it. Squirrels lived in the holes of the rock.
Originally 2x's + larger was blasted and used for road rock.

4. Front yard where you can see the school I went to when young. I crawled over the fence
ladder was built in, and went to school for several years.

Searching for Railroad Retirement Information

I just received word from NGS from Dick EASTMAN, EOGN that there is a new place to look for
information on the Railroad Retirement Board Records.
Atlanta, Ga now has them in their National Archives.

Records from the Railroad Retirement Board are now available at the National Archives, Southeast Region/Atlanta in Morrow.

It says the board was founded in 1936. You must supply the person's full name, date of birth
and if possible, Social Security number to have a file pulled.

These records are for all over the U. S. not just the Southeast.

I am enclosing the link because so many people have asked this question and I know there are
many looking for this information.

We have Anne Bowman is presenting:The final title of the presentation is "Irish and Scots-Irish Genealogical Research: Tips and hints to help with the search". This presentation gives an overview of the subject matter and looks at the big picture of researching immigrant ancestors. We will review the historical context of these immigrant groups, which records hold the most promise (both in U.S. sources and those in the U.K.) and a list of useful websites and resources will be provided.

Anne Bowman was born and raised in the suburban Chicago area and has lived in San Diego for over 25 years. She attended Loyola University of Chicago for both her undergraduate and dental degrees and earned a Certificate of Specialty in Periodontics at LSU in New Orleans. She spent five years on active duty as a Navy Dental Officer before opening a private practice in Chula Vista, retiring from dentistry after 36 years of direct patient care.

Anne’s interest in genealogy had an unusual beginning. Both of her parents were only children so she grew up without any aunts, uncles or first cousins and she knew only one of her four grandparents. When her first niece was born in 1998 she decided to investigate as much of her family tree as possible. What began as a casual hobby has evolved into a new career.

She completed the Boston University Genealogical Research Program in 2010 and is a member of the Linares Chapter of the DAR. She is currently enrolled in the ProGen Study Club and her ultimate goal is to earn Certification from the Board of Genealogical Certification. She is a member of the National Genealogical Society, The Association of Professional Genealogists, The Polish Genealogical Society of America and The Southern California Genealogical Society.

I just read on my cousins Facebook that more tornado's are being spotted and
the potential for more damage is great.

If you have the ability to get the word to the local people to not toss out the pieces of pictures, bible, school records etc please do. I do not know who all blogs in the southern region but a few.

We never learned even if we lost a blogger home or a genealogist, historians house but I can guarantee you that we did. Whether they were active or just did their own family they are
historians for their family and the Keeper of those Keys.

Looking at all the photo's and papers and albums and hand work found tells me we have some awesome
terrific outstanding people out there.

We need to make sure that the farmer and the townperson whom finds data of any kind gets it to any of the safe places for it to be matched to it's owner or to it's descendants family.

Right now they are posting Tornado warnings for West Tenn and eastern Arkansas. Laine cousin dear be safe. Tina you do the same, all of you out there please take care and help those to get the word to others not to toss because it's a half picture etc.

Modern Gadgets we use in Genealogy

Well there is a Blog Carnival happening and it is about Current tech tools or programs, we use in genealogy.

I have to say I have some programs I use I like. But I am always looking for something that may be easier or better.

Again I was excited about getting an I-Pad and then things happened and I am awaiting to see
if the new computer will stop being non stable before I expend more money.

Right now I am wanting to learn more about the Droid device that Dick Eastman wrote about two days ago that is only $249. I am concerned for spending high dollar with minimal return.

I would never have dreamt my new machine would be so unstable and bouncy and frustrating.

I am looking forward to acquiring a hand held type scanner for pictures for my family from MOm's estate. I would like to know which one you all think is the very best and why. I am hoping to acquire and be doing this within the month.

So instead of talking up a item I use can you all talk up the reason for buying a good hand held scanner device and why that one verses other one. It is like a marketing device I need advise about the device.

I highly suspect my next system will be an HP. Should have done it this time.

I do like the Reunion program but Bruce Buzbee's program is very enticing and I could use it if I changed. I have used PAF, Paf for Mac, FTM, and Reunion, and use Geni.com for cloud computing.

Now I can talk up Geni.com it is a great site for sharing and gathering of information
with the ability to share with family and they add their own data. I can say I am a big advocate of Geni.com.

I was surprised to hear a statement he said but it made sense.

If everything is always the same and if your not willing to reach out to make change and
bring people in we are not going to win more members. He said that (Same) is a scary word to
hear us genealogists use to work with in the society.

We are moving in the right direction but we need to pick up the pace and expose our
members to more methods of exposure.

Wanting so much to learn how to do a webanair, expose the members to a blog radio show like
this one.
Sad to say, I am not technical for doing research. I am still learning computerize.

My goal is to have our members log into a chat room and learn a topic about a various place
they are wanting to learn more about from the comfort of their home. At a time they are not
working and can share in the dialogue.

He also mentioned another word we need to be careful of using. I will make a comment about
the other word next time.

Suspecting major change is on the horizon for genealogists in our very near future. My fear
is we do not leave behind the ones who are older and do not have the ease of access that has
moved us forward.

She attended Loyola University of Chicago for both her undergraduate and dental degrees and earned a Certificate of Specialty in Periodontics at LSU in New Orleans. She spent five years on active duty as a Navy Dental Officer before opening a private practice in Chula Vista, retiring from dentistry after 36 years of direct patient care.

Anne’s interest in genealogy had an unusual beginning. Both of her parents were only children so she grew up without any aunts, uncles or first cousins and she knew only one of her four grandparents. When her first niece was born in 1998 she decided to investigate as much of her family tree as possible. What began as a casual hobby has evolved into a new career.

She completed the Boston University Genealogical Research Program in 2010 and is a member of the Linares Chapter of the DAR. She is currently enrolled in the ProGen Study Club and her ultimate goal is to earn Certification from the Board of Genealogical Certification. She is a member of the National Genealogical Society, The Association of Professional Genealogists, The Polish Genealogical Society of America and The Southern California Genealogical Society.

I have a couple of more hints in researching women before normal documents (1800 or so) research the neighbors, friends and 2nd cousins of the man about the time of his marriage, particularly in Virginia and research any surnames that persistently show up later as neighbors and slave records. ~~ RKat91, AOL.com

6 April 2011, Lemon Grove Library. Please do come to this event. We are to determine how many meetings you want a month? What the topics do you want?
Thanks to those who came to the Seminar talk at the Bonita Library on Saturday to hear the Attorney Mr. Murphy and Insurance Agent Mr. Steven's.

Even though we have talked of their topics in the past we were able to learn a lot about Insurance and what areas we should be looking into for information. Yes, there are areas that are public some areas are definitely not.

Of course, we knew Wills were public but I did not know that Trusts were not.

It helps put a complete different spin on the future of genealogy. Where are the phone books for cell phones? Where is the information on items in the past were available to us?

Are you keeping track of all your living relatives that you can so the future will know who is whom and where? Census data is due out next spring. It is has been said that much of it will not be made available and some say only select is available. Others imply we will get it all over a major long period of time.

Library's are talking of tossing books and going only digital? Good Grief they can't get all the books on line now. That means many books we will no longer have access to no matter what.

Worse who is going to keep upgrading the systems of the items put on line and what back up method will they use to preserve them for all to see 40 years from now. Yup, that not important to the people of today.

We are to much of a now generation.

Topics coming up at the Library will be: Mid Atlantic Research and the development of those states, New England Research and the Development of those states, Southern Research and the
Development of those areas, are some topics. I am talking to some speakers on Ireland, Scotland and England. I would love to present a talk on how to use a chat room as a class room to attend on line chats that are genealogical in nature and you can learn from your own home computer.
There are Webanairs, and many new methods coming into our existance. Are you familiar with them and the changes in our research? Do you know what Cloud Computing is? Do you back up your Genealogy on a daily or weekly basis? What formats do you use to back up? Do you carry your research on a thumb drive so you have access if you run into a potential kin?

We will also touch on early American Indian research on the eastern seaboard of our country. If I can locate a speaker for this area then maybe some information on our local tribes history also. IF you know of someone contact me please. SusiCP@cox.net

Mr. Michael Murphy and Mr Del Stevens are presenting us some interesting facts that we can apply to our research. I am sure they will be sharing lots of interesting and fun information for us.

There will be talking done about Wills, Probates, and things related to that will help enlighten us for knowledge. There will be talking shared about Insurance and how it may affect our research.

We ask often what if they suffered a fire, a flood a loss of home? Are there records to learn more. I have found in some states yes. I am anxious to learn more about Insurance.

I am really excited to hear a lawyer's prospective on the Wills, Probates, and what it does to affect our research also. We have lots of exposure to these documents but I am sure this angle will help us have a new prospective on researching them.

There will be opportunity drawings and other activities to browse through also.

I will also share much of the knowledge I learned from the presentations I attended at the Family HIstory Fair in Escondido.

April 6 will be Where do we go from here? by Susi Pentico After teaching here for 10 years we need to know where you want to go next. There is new protocol at the library for meeting times and presenting notices for topics. So we need to preset for some months the topics you wish to hear.

April 20 will be " Catching up on our History" by Susi Pentico and others. Something very
important that was learned at the FHC Fair.

My talk will be on working with the first Five Censuses Taken for the United States. At first glance they are discouraging as there doesn't seem to be very much
information, but appearances are deceiving. With patience and perseverance facts can be discovered and ancestors found. By tracking children and ages within
locations your ancestors may be discovered. Of course it helps if you have the ancestor in question found in a later census so you do have an approximate age and
idea of where he is located. I will have a handout, but would like anyone interested to contact me via email or text or call me at 619 318 2790 so I know how many

First a note to say I have been to Mom's then home then back to attend her memorial end of January 2011.
Brain is getting better and body also. I missed a few events along the way but it could not be helped.

I got this in the mail the other day and thought you should all be aware of it.

The therapy I am receiving has helped me feel much better and with God's Will I will be
with my MOM for the next Genealogy Meeting.

You can all gather around and talk about Christmas traditions. Share cookies if someone brings
them and I am planning on seeing you all in January.

As you load and unload gifts be careful of the old trunk Lid. Mine gave me a concussion along with pinched nerves in my neck and upper back. I am so thankful I am feeling better and the physical therapy has been a true blessing to my spine.

Wednesday's Library Chatter, Lemon Grove
Wednesday's chatter was interesting, thought provoking and bordered on may topics
of the human beings development. We talked about migration, brought up by Clayton
regarding a current National Geographic magazine. Since humans followed animals
for food and warmth,and we were talking humans being around 20,000 years ago &
2,000 years ago. We discussed various finds in various caves and places that
indicates that the human race is very old. We talked about the use of the human
mind and it's powers we have explored and the powers that we can possibly develop
and use to make the world better.

Did all this relate to genealogy? Yes, it did. We talked about the program on
Fox News the night before and MTDNA and YDNA. which brought about all the above
mentioned topics and more. Samuel Adams and genetics was mentioned and discussed,
also it discussed the intermarrying of nationalities and the break down over
generations.

Bryan Sykes book "The Seven Daughters of Eve," tells us our beginnings and it is
scientific not biblical. It has become a fairly well accepted piece of science.

I loved studying Ancient History because it talks of the early peoples. These
peoples later became what we have for people of today. But our labels today
are very misleading for a genealogist.

Why does a paper have born Germany 1780? As Leland M and I have talked this is
poor genealogy in my eyes. Germany did not become a state until around 1870 or so.
A paper saying of European descent may be better until the actual region is pinned
down.

I think it would be fun to read a European's research paper for genealogy and how
far they go back and how do they list the Gaul's and Gaelic's etc.

I took all my obits and photographed them and put them all on disk. We collect obits of immigrants from my grandfather's village. I had to do hundreds of obits and I would have given up if I had to scan them all. I put them on a large sheet of white poster board and did them one after the other. I used my digital camera on the highest resolution as a scanner. ~~ Jo Saunders, Looking4Kin.com

Everyone heads up, the time is fast approaching for our handwriting expert to share her knowledge with us. Wednesday at the Civic Center Library, 365 F St in Chula Vista, across from the police station at 12 noon we start the general meeting and will introduce Paula Sassi to the attendees.

Remember to dig out an old letter, a Will, a Deed, a Xmas card maybe, something that has a signature of ancestor on it.

Then remember to circle Saturday and attend the Family History Fair Seminar, titled: Where do we go from Here? with Jean Wilcox Hibben and Alfredo Pena. As we move from a year of activity one direction and start to head another direction to continue to give the members & community knowledge and information and fun.

This event is at the Norman Park Center 270 F St. up the street from the library. It will be Saturday 2 October from 9 to 4:30.

5 Generation Charts- our Picnic was today -Sunday is Surnames

Great Day of 5 Generation Charts

Today we had a great turn out for 5 Generation Chart and Surname exchange day.

There was almost some one from every where on the wheel. I can think of only two places the
wheel hit that no one had kin that was there. But I know we have people whom have kin in
those regions also. :>)

Sunday, Gary Brock will be expounding on the surnames that were presented and telling where
they are from and what they mean as best as he can. Chula Vista Library 4th and F St. 12 to
3 P M.

It seems it was very hard for most to have a fully completed 5 Generation Chart. Many others
besides myself had 4 generations complete. I did not use the 5 Generation completed chart to
share today. Yes many of the female lines are very hard to track with accuracy.

It seems sad that we can not go back 5 full generations with completed data. I wonder how
much our grandparents knew that we did not learn that would solve this. Since we are talking
of their Grandparents.

5 Generation Charts and our Picnic is tomorrow

5 Generation Charts and Annual Picnic

The picnic is tomorrow at the Elks Lodge in Chula Vista off Telegraph Canyon Rd.

Make sure you bring your 5 Generation Charts can be up to 7 generations so you may be using
two of them.

Many of us are doing a 4 Generation Chart twice easier to see and we will have
the 7 generations we are allowed to use.

If you have received new information make sure you have entered it onto the charts and
sited the source.

Remember this is bring a sack lunch and share in the games and fun. Also there will be
a White Elephant raffle. Not sure if we are doing a book sale.

Starts by 11 and ends around 2:00. Join Gary in the Wheel of Fortune for your family
surnames and find either new people to share research with or new kin or better yet both.

This will also show how much you learned at the 5 Generation Chart and Forms classes
Ruth did to help everyone.

Wednesday Evening in Lemon Grove 19 August 2010

It also is Lemon Grove Research meeting day. 6 Pm Lemon Grove Library.

We will be sharing information on 5 Generation Charts and what they can accomplish for us in

genealogy. We are stressing these charts and others because they really tell you more than

you realize as you are filling them in or leaving blank holes.

I am going to show you a chart that Ruth Himan uses that was new to me and Gary Brock was

adding to it already. We shall share our research news and talk about if we have any goals

we set last year and if accomplishing any of them. Does setting goals help you to move

forward with your research?

The July program meeting of the Chula Vista Genealogical Society is on Wednesday, 28 July at 12 noon in the auditorium of the Chula Vista Civic Center Branch Library (365 F Street in downtown Chula Vista).

After a brief business meeting, the program speaker will by CVGS member Susi Pentico on "Vital Records and Where You May Find Them."

The program description includes:

Do you really know what is a Vital Record?

This presentation will be filled with some of the very “normal” places to find Vital Records. It will also provide some neat tips on some unconventional places to find information and will share some unconventional methods used to find vital records.

Susi Pentico has been a genealogy speaker for the Chula Vista Genealogical Society for more than ten years. She has given talks throughout the county over the past seven years and has been a research specialist for over fifteen years online, working previously with the old Golden Gate Forum, and with two other online genealogy sites that are no more. She currently co-hosts a class on www.GenealogyWise.com with old friend Rita Ely regarding Vital Records. They have done this for three plus years, but only recently moved to Genealogywise.com. Susi has been researching her ancestry since she was about 20 years old.

This program is free for all to attend. Vital Records for Lemon Grove Genealogy Attendees

This evening we numbered six and we talked a bit about probate and its's difficult turns in the County of San Diego, state of California. Then we turned to a more enjoyable chat about learning what a Vital Record is and where one my look to locate them.
Vital Records have an interesting description for themselves. They can be found about anywhere.

Learning also that newspapers of the past was the equivalent of the internet of today. Newspapers reached out to inform and share knowledge with the community and its neighboring areas. Data of all descriptions and sizes, meant to reach far and wide was put in papers of the 1700 and 1800's. It was a better means of communication than the Mail. It reported on when Mail was not picked up to notify the potential recipients. Making it a great source of vital information.

What was the most published vital record of the 1700 and 1800's? Do you know that answer. Do you know what area of the country had the most information published in this time period?

These were some of the things we talked of. Sites for newspaper information were given such as: GenealogyBank, Footnote, NARA, Libraries, Historical Societies and other sources.

Lemon Grove 7 July

Greetings everyone, I was glad to see the faces that came to the meeting tonight but we sure missed those who did not come.
We hope others are well and making headway in their research.

Carol was able to share her Great Birthday Adventure with us about the HIldreth family. We were glad she had such a terrific event and found such a pleasant cousin of distance to chat about the Hildreth family. All of this, in our own back yard of Poway.

I shared the knowledge of Medical Genealogy with those in attendance. I also shared my genetic fingers and toes for the group to see. We talked about the need for this type of research and was I amazed to learn that Carol's Dr had taken her medical history to heart and she had help before trouble by her Doctor because of the family knowledge known. That is really what Medical Genealogy is about. The helping of saving some ones life, be it your own, a child or grandchild, cousin, niece or nephew.

What is cool is when you are not sure someone is related and you compare medical history it then may encourage you to do DNA testing to see if links because of the potential for inherited tendency's for medical situations.

More than one way to find a potential link when doing genealogy even if it is unconventional.

Happy Birthday Card Party for MOM 90th

I am posting this in case you want to join in and send MOM a card. She will be 90 on the 29th and due to my siblings illness we are not able to host her a party so it was advised I try a Happy Birthday Card Party.

Remember she is turning 90 so larger print is easier to see, My relative said she would read the cards to her that she can not see though.

Because she has a PO BOX I think this is okay and the post office is prepared for her to receive mail for her 90th birthday.
I spoke to them before I posted in case it would be a problem.

She is the reason I started Genealogy when I was young to help her and then to help myself and my new born son.
He by the way just turned 50. So do your medical genealogy it may save a life.

Lemon Grove 16 June Event Gary Brock

Gary Brock came to the Lemon Grove Group and did a great presentation about the Chula Vista Genealogy Society this evening.
I was rather impressed with the amount we have grown over the years.

The amount of books we have in the library for use and the amount we spend on the books for library every year was
impressive. This does not count the given books by the society members through out the year either.

We also have learned the area is better recognized now with new arrangements to help the library and the genealogy
representatives. That was so awesome to hear.

We are now 104 strong.

I was sad we had such a small number tonight but we never know whom will show up. Alas having the schedule correct on the
library calendar would be nice though. Always the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month. 6 to 8 pm please. This may be why
attendance was low. I sure hope they do not show up next Wednesday for we will not be there.

Thanks to everyone for the nice evening. Library staff for the preparation, to the waitress who served our dinner later at Anna's.

Genealogy, Lemon Grove, speaker Gary Brock

Wednesday's Event will feature Gary Brock and his great tidbits on Society Membership.
It is hoped you will enjoy his presentation and have a greater understanding of what societies are and what they can do
to help a genealogist or family historian in their research.

We will also share some of the information we brought back from the Jamboree in Burbank this last weekend. Lots of classes were presented and many were attended by Virginia, Shirley, Ruth and Susi. Also both Cindy's were there as was Joan L and her dil. Of course many others from the San Diego Genealogy Society attended also.

We went by train to Burbank and returned the same way. What a relaxing way to travel. It is hoped more will consider this for next year because it breaks down to a very affordable cost and so much information is to be gained.

Please share this site with other genealogists in the area in case they would love to come and are working normally during the day.

Lemon Grove' Genealogy Surprise Event

The Lemon Grove Genealogy Group, had a interesting meeting the other day. I was away attending a family event and
Ruth Himan offered to step in and replace me. Replace me, she did. Here is what happened in her words.

1. 9 people tonight ----- Virginia did take attendance and reported to the front desk.

2. We received 7 membership applications and all applicants added pedigrees for the Chula Vista Society.
Several of the new members including Arlene Watters and Patricia Ayer spent a great deal of time copying their extensive well researched family pedigree chart for the Chula Vista Genealogy Binders. Other new members like Cathy Collins struggled to place names of her relatives.

3. Very large pre-printed blank pedigree charts were admired by some of the other attendees.

4. Virginia Taylor distributed outdated Chula Vista Newsletters. The newsletters were discussed as being (although from 2009) still having very good information, interesting stories and pertinent content.

5. We discussed some genealogy slang because we had a couple of genealogy happy dances.

6. First Happy Dance came when we were shown about a dozen photos, and copies of special dipolmas of Patty Smith's parents and grandparents.
Patty Smith hit the jackpot with connecting with a cousin in Florida. This is the daughter of her mother's sister.
Patty Smith showed us pictures of her great grandmother that got her interested in genealogy. Then she showed us handsome handsome men ---her great grandfathe and an uncle. There was an adorable picture of a sweet chubby girl about three --- the shortest of about six children standing in a line (side view) but look like the adoable little girl in jacket and bonnet slipped away and was looking straight on to the camera. Cute cute cute ---- It was a picture of Patty Smith at a very younger age.
Patty also shared with us her letter and cream and sugar set she received from her grandmother over 30 years ago. Patty's Aunt cried when she found Patty had the set. The aunt had remembered how her mother had said she very much wanted Patty to have the set.

7. Then Karen B. shared another delightful story of finding an entire family that she could not document as when and how they arrived in America. The Scottish family left Liverpool and then were tossed about in a storm left to drift in the ocean for quite awhile before being rescued by other ships. Yet with many delays, changing ships having to land out of port and being transferred by life boats the family finally landed in America. The account of the ships tubulant voyage is recorded in an article Karen found in a New York Newspaper. Yet soon after landing the family is separated and she finds a small 5 year old boy recorded on a census as being an inmate! Further investigation indicates the boy was placed in an orphanage. Years later the boy is reunited with his mother when the mother remarries. Besides the normal misspellings, confused names, and issues of researching a family, the mother's name changes, children's separate living arrangements made the search very difficult but very rewarding when she finally accounted for the mother and all the children.
The ships manifast indicated the family traveled 2nd class and separate from the first class. The steerage indicated 28 people but no names. Karen marveled that had her family traveled steerage she would have never found the family.

8. John was puzzled over some small triangle shaped stones he is finding in his yard.

9. Another genealogy slang word we introduced tonight was "cousin bait". We began exploring avenues to meeting cousins.We discussed cold calling, obituaries, Christmas Cards, and family group sheets.
I shared a completed family group sheet I had completed for my gg grandparents with my g grandfather being their sixth child. I was able to demonstrate how some of the other siblings contained a significant amount of information --which could indicate decsendents of my g-grandfather's sibling as having an interest in genealogy. A possible "cousin" to find.

10. Carol Burnett explained how she "e-mail met" her "cousin" Randy Seaver. Randy and Carol discovered they were cousins by Susi's RootsBounds Blog. We discussed blogging and websites were being credited with matching up more "cousins" than the on-line family trees.

So there was a great meeting, which made me feel good for everyone. We will have a speaker for the next event.

Lemon Grove Meeting Results

Nine people came to the meeting last evening, all had interesting news to share. Arlene found her missing ancestress. Carol was able to go Cemetery searching with co member Ruth. Ruth preparing to take Dad to old homestead area in the fall. Patty working on resolving link mystery. Clayton shared a story about 1945 time era. Patsy is busy working on her information.
Mary just enjoyed everyone's comments. Virginia was doing the same since we have been so busy making things work right in our new program at the Chula Vista Genealogy Society for up coming fall seminar. I shared the discovery of an Ancestress name, by a cousin regarding the Duvall line.

It was shared that we will be having a couple of interesting speakers coming up in the next few months. Everyone seemed to enjoy the trip to library.

We missed seeing: Kathy, Cathy, Karen & Bob, Carol, and others who pop in to learn new things and share information.

Two new charts for use with your genealogy were passed out that was found when I was preparing for my Seminar talk that was given 24 April in Chula Vista. One is very informative for helping you look at new places for data. Some list different data in court houses that has not been mentioned before. These topics were discussed and thought to be interesting, we had not heard of much researching being used along these lines.

We meet again on the third Wed of May at 6 pm at the Lemon Grove Library. Come see what your missing for research venues and ways to rethink a problem.

Chasing Names and Chasing Places JIPP

This last week we went to meet a possible cousin of my dcd mother in law Louise Jipp Pentico.

Mary and I found Elkie Diehl in Germany a few years back and she has a Ggrandmother that was a JIPP.
Same region our Jipp comes from.

This week I meet a man that was a good resemblance of my husband in two dominate ways.

When Sis and I were walking back to meet this man she said, " Your right he does look like my brother."

So was there a Jipp way back some where that interlinks all these lines? It appears it may be the case.

Mom was from the lines near Wangels, We think the town of Grammdorf or very near. We have some

WE do not know where Christian Frederick Jipp was born or buried. Believe them to be Lutheran, and they had two
Pastors as children. Charles was one. Ernest was the other one.

Christian Frederick Jipp was born 18 Sept 1824, marries Sophia Hammerich born 16 May 1835 in Holstein.

Henry, b 29 April 1864
Charles b 15 Aug 1866
Caroline b 10 Nov 1869
Herman, b 31 Jan 1874

Christian JIPP was a carpenter he died 4 Feb 1881 in Grammdorf, Germany at the age of 57.

In 1882, Sophia Jipp and her sister, Mrs. Grunwald brought the five children to America.

Ernst their oldest child came to USA in 1874 at age of 16. He studied to be a minister and died at age 23 in Iowa, in 1880,
prior to his father's death in Germany.

Later I can post the Picture of Mr. Jipp that we have. Charles JIPP was the father of Louise Jipp Pentico, who looks like the Karl Jipp in a German Advertisement.
